A Therapeutic Study of Intussusception


Abstract
Clinical evaluation was performed on 46 cases with intussusception who were admitted to dept. of general surgery, Chungnam National University, School of Medicine during the recent 4 years and the following results were obtained.
1. In the age and sex distribution, the age incidence under 1 year old was most common (76%), but it was absent under 2 month of age and 7% in adult. Male to female ratio was 1.9:1.
2. The patient who visited to our hospital within 24 hours from onset of the symptoms was occupied in 45%.
3. Highest incidence in seasonal distribution was spring(41%) && autumn(26%).
4. On the etiology of intussusception, idiopathic type was most c;:nmon (87%.-), Peutz Jeghers syndrome was noticed in cne case in adults.
5. The cardinal symptoms and signs were abdominal pain (91%), vomiting (89%), abdominal ~aass(87%), bloody raicoid stool(currant jelly stool) (70,¡Æ%,). Painless intussusception was 7%.
6. The a atomic types of intussusception composed of ileocolic 63%, ileocecal 20%, ileoileal type 9%, ileoileocolic type 4%, ileoileccal type 2%, colocolic type 2%.
7. The co iplications developed in 10 cases of 46 cases(22%) including the recurrent intu¡þssus--eption(3 cases, 7%).
8. The mortality rate was one case(2%) through the total cases, this case was who had been transferred to hospital over four days after symptom onset.
9. In correlation with body weight of patients in the age from 4 to 9 months(23 cases, 50%) all cases was over 50 percentile.
10. The barium reduction was successful in 14 cases(42%) of 33 cases. In the surgical praccdure, manual reduction was performed in 29 cases (63¡Æ0) and resection was made in 3 cases(7%)
